Fight Club Essay In the movie â€Å"Fight Club† is about the narrator, Jack’s, fantasy of an alternate reality, his personal shadow. Tyler Durden represents Jack’s unconscious collective shadow. Jack, the protagonist, has a meaningless, boring and empty life, and suffers from insomnia. Jack tries to lend color to his insignificant life by purchasing new commodities like his furniture which are the fetish items of the narrator and they provide him with more meaningful existence. Jack has a dull life and he could not find any time for his hobbies due to his busy business life. He has no girlfriend or even a close friend. He does nothing to have fun and he suppresses all his instincts for pleasure in his unconscious. Although he is not happy about his life, every morning he wakes up, goes to work and travels frequently. He suffers from insomnia because he is suppressing his shadow. Later, he finds the idea of participating in cancer and disease support groups. Jack lacks the courage to confront his shadow. Instead, Jack indentifies with her persona, the role the world expects him to play. As the movie progresses Jack gradually begins to become aware of his shadow, and how it motivates his behavior. It is only by doing so that he begins the process of self-realization. One criticism that will be made is that the movie depicts a superficial and incomplete process of self-realization. â€Å"Jung considers the confrontation with the shadow, with one’s own evil, to be of the great psychological value. Understanding something about one’s shadow side is the beginning of self-knowledge. Without the realization of the shadow all real further psychological progress is blocked† (34). As I mentioned before, Tyler Durden is the collective unconscious side of Jack. In other words, Tyler represents the shadow of the narrator in â€Å"political confrontation†. Jack projects onto Tyler, the enemy side, which we view as hopelessly corrupt, sadistic, vindictive, and inhuman. â€Å"The collective shadow, viewed as a component of the collective unconscious, is the archetype of collective evil and can be represented by such archetypal images as the Devil, the Enemy, the Bad Guys, and the Evil Empire† (33-4). Tyler slowly begins to take control away from the narrator. The narrator gets pleasure from Tyler’s crazy, uncontrolled behaviors because Tyler does the things that the narrator imagines doing unconsciously, but was unable to do because of ociety pressure, which encouraged repressing his desires. Jung states, â€Å"Your shadow, the imperfect being in you that follows after and does everything which you are loath to do, all the things you are too cowardly or too decent to do† (35). The narrator gets pleasure from these anarchistic behaviors. Tyler also destroys the narrator’s house in order to prevent him from continuing his virtual life. Then, Tyler initiates a reaction like Jung’s shadow conception, full of violence and sexuality. He manifests his violence and forms an underground boxing club called Fight Club. Hopeless people like Bob who has testicular cancer and many other people who are not happy about their lives, which are full of suppressed emotions and societal pressures, join Fight Club. Tyler also satisfies his sexual instincts with Marla whereas the narrator fails to do so. Tyler becomes a cult hero and he even manages to get paid without ever going to work because of the shadow’s charisma, self-confidence and revolutionary aspect. However, after a while we start to realize the negative effects of the shadow. The shadow, Tyler Durden, takes control completely and he gets out of balance. Fight Club becomes an anarchistic group and Tyler prepares a big plan (Project Mayhem) for destroying all the banks, financial sector buildings. Tyler is thus transformed into a public enemy who wants to destroy the capitalist system. In the movie, Tyler says, â€Å"It is only when you have lost everything, you are free to do anything†. He wants to live in a primitive society in which everyone has nothing and everyone is equal. This feeling comes to his mind because of the influence of the shadow archetype. As Jung mentioned, archetypes are characteristics that reflect our primitive nature. Tyler rants, â€Å"You are not your job, you are not your money in your bank account†. The shadow becomes very destructive, violent and dangerous as Tyler clearly becomes a monster who threatens society. Tyler sees society and the capitalist system as his enemies. Tyler shows us exactly all the aspects of Jung’s shadow concept: violence, sexuality, self-confidence, charisma, courage, madness and a lack of balance. What makes Tyler so strong is the narrator’s error in repressing his shadow for such a long time. After a period, the narrator understands that his conscious mind was taken over for a while and he begins to fight Tyler. He gets rid of Tyler in the last scene by shooting himself and thus by metaphorically reducing the influence of the shadow, Tyler in his mind. The narrator thus achieves a new psychical balance and gets rid of his shadow Tyler Durden. Jung explains, â€Å"Consequently, the murder of the hero represents the need for change, for a ‘revaluation of earlier values,’ at midlife. The shadow figures of savage and dwarf represents the murderous energy as well as the insight, the shadow wisdom, needed to kill the hero and to transcend a youthful heroic attitude toward life†.

It can be done by identifying strengths and weaknesses of the person. For that, which learning style the person have must be identified. To identify the learning style of the person, there is some tools like questionnaire and learning surveys by Peter Honey and Alan Mumford(ARPT), David Kolb(VAK), Carl Jugg and Mybers Briggs(type E/I,S/N,T/F,J/P). Using SWOT analysis, I analyse my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the personal skills and traits considering four core competent skills discussed in first section. At the end, I present a personal development plan to use, which suggest the practical way to utilize the personal attributes profitably and draw attractive picture of my personality and organisation as a whole. In section two, I have already identified my strengths and weaknesses to put the things into practice and achieve desired result. Strengths and weaknesses are the own internal favourable and unfavourable points which helps the person to rise up. It can only improved by self observation and improvement. This can be improved by adapting team working style emphasising on co-ordination and co-operation with and of colleagues and subordinates in the organisation. Therefore, focus on work delegation and team work is necessary to work within deadlines and try to get optimum using all the available resources. M-Measurable: to delegate the job, it is necessary to design proper job description and draw the skills required to perform it by using various techniques like feedback of the colleagues, looking at other company. Set the system and ways to measure the performance of people and the system laid down to achieve the objectives. So, it ensures active participation with clear understanding of job and achievements. A-Achievable: To do the task within time frame the right job should be assigned to a right person,. For that, I have to value the other person’s ability to perform specific job and assigned him that job with required guidelines and data to perform productively. The meeting and effective presentation of the delegated job to each subordinates and colleagues is necessary to achieve the goals. So here comes the presentation and meeting skills to convey the idea and communicate regarding the role they have to play to drive towards the achievements of objectives. So, here I have to concentrate on my interpersonal skills and getting co-operation and co-ordination with colleagues and subordinates to perform time bound duties. R-Relevant: It should be take care that subordinate have no ambiguity relating to his roles and targets to be met as a team member and organisational goals. Therefore, all the efforts must be towards the achievement of organisational objectives. The roles and targets can be communicate by way of successful meeting and effective presentation by the manager. As it saves time, efforts, money of people and organisation as well. T-Time Defined: If all the things are right doing in right way by the right person, it is also necessary that it should be complete within time defined. Because time is money, and to be successful it should be utilize effectively by allocating sufficient time to each an every activity as per its importance to do. Evidence of Monitoring and Feedback: As per the outcome of the SWOT and SMART, I have to follow the diary and records of the subordinates and colleagues achievements and skills to perform better. Other necessary thing is to is maintain and analyse time log until I follow the proper time schedule as prepared. With all this, unbiased regular self assessment using SWOT helps me to ride the cycle of continuous development. I am following time log daily as well as weekly when i was explained in class lecture and now at the end of this 9th week I found that I am very much nearer to follow the time schedule set weekly. And I followed daily time log and I achieved time frame in working day not in weekends and I am trying to achieve it. Affordability in the Malaysian context applies in the sense that the houses are affordable within the range that population can quickly secure sources of finances to purchase such homes and possess them as owners. The government of Malaysia saw the need of a program for housing that was to be formalized so as to ensure that the national objective of ensuring that there was adequate housing that was affordable was met[3]. The housing program gives an outline of the supply of houses defined by the housing type regarding the low cost, medium cost and high-cost homes that are to be produced by the private and the public in a span of five years as dictated by the development plan. Affordable housing and housing affordability that is often interchanged in Malaysia but each represents two categories of problems. In one way, affordable housing caters for the supply of homes about the median income of the household. The private developers in most cases get involved in supplying high and medium cost housing. However, in the late 1980s, the government now fully integrated the private developers to provide housing at low cost. The private developers played a leading role in the Fourth Malaysian Plan when they reached the total targeted units that were required. It is since then that the pri vate sector accounts for more than 65% of the low-cost housing in Malaysia[5].Government intervention assumes seven forms in the economy, use of quotas, maximum and minimum price policies, issuing subsidies, regulation and legislation and government ownership. However, there are various perspectives that government employs as intervention plans more so in the real estate market where the government has control over the development of land. The intervention of the government in the housing through subsidies is necessary for some ways. One is that there is the provision of improved health facilities regarding clean water supply[6]. It is the duty of the government to ensure that water is made available in places where there is a settlement. Drainage is also crucial to ensure that contaminated water and sewerage have a channel of being disposed of as they may bring water-borne diseases such as cholera which is catastrophic. Subsidies also have the effect of ensuring that there is fairness and maintain social equilibrium. A good example is a program that provides housing in the slum where there are individuals classified as low-income earners. In such a program that ensures that there is adequate housing in the slum, it ensures that the gap between the rich and the poor is minimized as there is access to the basic need and that is housing. Subsides reduce inefficiencies associated with the real estate market. There are no monopoly profits for the private developers as is the case where there is no government intervention. As portrayed in the United States, most of the institutions that were residential in nature were set up by the government during the recession and were intended to boost economic growth. One of the objectives of the government is to ensure that there is the adequate housing of high quality for all people irrespective of the social stratification. The government has a leading role in ensuring that there are programs to achieve the necessary housing program. According to research that was conducted, it proved that the nominal prices of houses had increased drastically since the 1990s.In some countries such as Spain and Britain, there has been 100% increment in the prices something worth worrying. The degree of increase in prices of the houses made economists have something to research on so as to provide the solution to the problem of increased prices. As a result, many researchers came to a conclusion that the increased costs were as a result of house price bubbles in such countries[9]. However, recently the housing prices seem to be dropping and as such the current slow market in the housing sector is a good indicator for the long-term growth. It is predicted that real estate market is to remain constant in this year amidst the many challenges[10].The number of unsold units continues to rise and currently, stands at 16% which is a slowdown in the real estate market[11].The stringent requirements when securing a loan and the uncertainty in job security are some of the factors making consumer expenditure on housing drop significantly. Real estate market is expected to slow down in 2017 due to the economy slowing down and as such the prices of the housing will fall.[12]Selling of property in Malaysia has been crippled after the Ringgit depreciated and as such the prices for the housing have dropped. The real estate agents have taken second jobs to have their end meet as there are few jobs in the real estate market. One person who used to sell two to three apartments in a month sells nothing[13].However, despite the recent economic downturn that has crippled the real estate market, there are prospects for the Malaysian market in future. The demand for housing will always provide better prices for the houses. It is for such reasons that the government intervenes to ensure that there is economic growth[14].
